Felix the cat

Felix the Cat is a character from cartoon created in the silent-film era. He has white eyes, black body, and giant grin, mixed with the surrealism of the situations in which his cartoons place him, Felix became one of the most recognizable characters in the cartoon world.

The origins of Felix remain disputed. Australian cartoonist and film entrepreneur Pat Sullivan and American animator Otto Messmer said that they created Felix. Some historians argue whit that. What is certain is that Felix emerged from Sullivan's studio, and cartoons featuring the character enjoyed unprecedented success and popularity in the 1920s.

Felix enjoyed enormous popularity, from 1922, in international popular culture. He got his own comic strip which was drawn by Messmer and his image soon adorned different kind of merchandise from ceramics, toys, postcards and much more. There were several manufacturers who made stuffed Felix toys. Some jazz bands such as Paul Whiteman's played songs about Felix. The most popular song of 1923 was "Felix Kept On Walking".

Felix's success was fading by the late 1920s with the arrival of sound cartoons. These new shorts, particularly those of Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse, had made the silent offerings of Sullivan and Messmer, who were then unwilling to move to sound production, seem outdated.

By the way, you have a partner in the suffering, and that is ME!
Some weeks ago I got stuck with my tummy to a fly- strip which had been attached to the kitchen cupboard. When I tried to get rid of the damn thing I got more and more entangled :o(
My Missus saw this and tried to help by pulling the fly-strip out of my fur - of course it did not work!
After a seemingly never ending time and plenty of the disgusting hot water the
terrible thing had disappeared out of my fur, but some of the glue wouldn't come out.
So my Missus got out the scissors, and ...do I have to say more? Absolute disgusting,
I looked like a plucked chicken. Meouw !!!

But now for the icing of the cake as they say: The girlfriend of my Missus came to visit us, and she greeted me with gusto. She loves me very much, I don't know why. Then she noticed the bare spots on my behind and asked for the reason of my disfigurement. My Missus told her about my mishap, and she wanted to show her friend another spot where some of my fur had been cut off. She lifted me up, so the friend could look under my tummy. She lifted me higher, and higher, and then it happened! She pushed me on to another fly-strip which was hanging from the ceiling, she had overlooked this one, and now I was wrapped up again! Heeeeelp !!!!!!
Once more the scissors came out and I lost my newly grown hair again.
Well, don't YOU talk about embarrassment, I presented a much worse sight.
By now I am as beautiful as ever, yeah.

Blacky the wall cat

Our first cat we called Blacky. While we were building our house we always took her with us to the building site, so she could explore the growing house. We also did this when we were tiling the bathroom. We had nearly finished, and wanted to go to bed at 2pm.

Blacky had gone!
We could hear her miaow though, so we searched the house, but - nothing. We started again, then as we came near the bathroom the miaow became louder. Right in the bathroom the noise was very distinct - but alas no cat!

We called...... silence. We walked away........ "Miaow !".

At last we could identify where the noise came from, she called from behind a wall. Now I must explain to you, that we have a wooden house with hollow walls. No problem at all, because all the walls are tightly sealed, except for one spot. The top edge had an opening or 14 by 50 cm, inside there was no beam, it went straight down, 250 cm deep. Exactly this spot the cat had found, and of course had to explore what was in there.

Now what could we possibly do?
We let down a small wooden plank on a rope. Smart Blacky did the right thing, and climbed on. We could pull her up - about 20 cm, no more. So we tried again, and again, and again... it wouldn't work.
Finally we had to cut a hole in the wall, hoping all the time that Blacky would duck down and avoid being hit by the saw. We could not make the hole too high up because we had to be able to pull her out.
Finally it worked. As we pulled her out she was covered over and over in sawdust, she was more a 'Brownie' than a 'Blacky'.
She was very happy to have come out of her prison, but also very nervous. We had to calm her down, and with some 'goodies' we managed to do just that. Of course no one could sleep that night.

Next morning the tradesmen had a good laugh!
For some time to come Blacky always made a detour around the bathroom.

One night around three o/clock in the morning, I woke up to a strange noise.
Roll, roll, tap, tap ...that's how it sounded, and so on, and so on ...
As I am not very brave, I sent my wife to the kitchen to enquire what was going on.She was not too enthusiastic about it but she went.
When she did not return after a while, I had to pluck up all my courage, to find out the source of the noise. There they were, both of them, cat and.....

We heard loud complaints when we threw the potato into the kitchen bin, but finally the cat followed us back to the bedroom.
About an hour later we heard some terrific noise from the kitchen. We both ran there, and saw what Mumpfi presented us with - she had managed to open the door under the sink, to pull out the bucket, thrown it over, and there she was sitting on the kitchen floor playing 'potato-ball'
That was the end of a good night's sleep.
